ATEK Engineering Consultants, LLC is a Native American owned Arizona-based engineering consulting firm specializing in geotechnical engineering, materials engineering, construction materials testing and special inspection services. ATEK Principals have a wealth of knowledge of the geotechnical conditions of the southwest which allows them to provided cost effective engineering solutions to complex projects.

Meet The Team

Armando Ortega, P.E.

Principal Geotechnical Engineer

Mr. Ortega has 22 years experience in geotechnical and materials engineering including design, construction, and inspection on sports facilities, energy facilities, educational facilities, roadways/highways, bridges, retaining structures, and residential developments,. His responsibilities range from financial and technical management of regional and department units to performing and supervising field and laboratory materials testing, geotechnical engineering and special inspections.  His testing and inspection proficiency includes soil mechanics, mass grading and structural fill, post-tensioned and structural concrete, structural masonry, structural steel and high strength bolting, caissons and various foundation systems, and asphalt and concrete paving. Additionally, Mr. Ortega has performed the pavement and geotechnical design for numerous public agencies including various state-highway projects throughout Arizona, including several large urban freeways in Maricopa County.  His involvement in pavement design includes structural section design, construction material specifications, inspection and testing, and mix design review for both rigid and flexible pavements.

Rafael Hernandez, P.E.

Principal Materials Engineer

Mr. Hernandez has over 19 years of experience in various capacities, including project management, contract administration, construction assurance and testing and special inspection on numerous projects that have included single and multi-story commercial structures, residential land development, roadways, single-family housing, public utilities, and retaining walls. His experience has ranged from performance of field and laboratory materials tests, reviewing of AC mix designs for local agencies and special inspection. Areas of inspection include mass grading and structural fill, pre-stress and reinforced concrete, spray-applied fire proofing, structural steel and welding, structural masonry, caissons and asphalt paving. Additionally Mr. Hernandez’s responsibilities consist of contract administration, managing projects, managing lab/field technicians and reviewing of field and laboratory reports.
